LiquiMoly: Oils and additives for generators

Reliability is the most important feature of generating sets. To avoid problems, you need to be able to rely completely on your generating set. The products LIQUI MOLY specially developed for generator sets help to ensure that your appliance works perfectly and remains operational.

LIQUI MOLY lubricants reduce wear and extend maintenance intervals.

The use of additives increases the stability and flammability of fuels.
This significantly increases efficiency, particularly when the fuel is of lower quality. The addition of additives also reduces fuel consumption and pollutant emissions, and allows maintenance intervals to be extended even further.

Is it possible to extend the oil change interval by using a quality oil?

Yes, the oil change interval can be significantly extended when a quality oil is used.

If so, why?

Quality oils contain a powerful cocktail of additives that protect and maintain the engine over a longer period of time and can therefore remain in the engine for longer. The presence of dispersant and detergent additives in the oil keeps the engine clean and prevents deposits from forming. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Why does the oil consumption of some generators increase? sometimes high?

If inadequate, poor-quality oil is used, deposits form on the sealing rings and oil scraper rings, causing them to stick. As a result, the seal between the crankcase and the combustion chamber is no longer guaranteed. This leads to contamination of the oil by the fuel, and oil enters the combustion chamber where it is burnt.

How can you recognise whether the oil is good or poor quality?

By carrying out oil analyses at the end of the oil change interval.
These oil analyses can be carried out by LIQUI MOLY or by an analysis laboratory near you.

How do I find the right engine oil?

By consulting the operating instructions or lubrication schedule of the generator set manufacturer or by contacting the LIQUI MOLY Technical Applications Department.

How can you save money with a better quality/more expensive oil?

Better quality oil means longer oil change intervals and lower oil consumption. In addition, good quality oil maintains the equipment and extends its service life.

How long are the oil change intervals? for LIQUI MOLY motor oils?

LIQUI MOLY does not prescribe the duration of oil change intervals for the various components. It is defined in the component manufacturer's instructions. The length of the interval depends not only on the oil, but also on the oil filter and the associated filter system. By examining these three important elements, the manufacturer is able to define the required oil quality and the duration of the oil change interval. External influences, such as load variations and the sulphur content of diesel fuel, can affect the length of the interval.

Does viscosity depend on temperature?

At low temperatures, viscosity is decisive, because the cold circulation of the oil in the engine of the generating set is important. At high temperatures, the outside temperature plays no role, as the oil temperature in the engine rises to around 100°C.

Engine lubrication times

This is how long it takes for the engine oil to reach the last lubrication point when starting from cold (0°C).

What are the effects of fuel additives?

Fuel additives can improve cetane number, clean the system and keep it clean.
This reduces fuel consumption and damage to components. As a result, generator downtime is reduced. In addition, all LIQUI MOLY additives protect the entire fuel system against corrosion.

Why is it important to clean the engine?

By cleaning the engine, all the deposits that have built up during the interval are dissolved before the oil change and removed with the oil change. The pistons and oil scraper rings are clean again and the engine requires less oil. LIQUI MOLY recommends cleaning the engine with its engine rinse product before using a high quality LIQUI MOLY engine oil so that it can deliver its full power.

How does diesel quality affect the maintenance interval?

Injectors clog up more quickly when the quality of the diesel is not very good. This can lead to a poor spray pattern. The acid neutralisation of the oil, indicated by the TNB index, is used up more quickly. In other words, the oil change interval becomes shorter.

What does the TBN value mean for engine oil?

25% TBN = total base number. By calculating the TBN value of the used oil in relation to the value of the fresh oil, it is possible to determine the current alkalinity of the lubricating oil, which is the main parameter for determining whether or not the oil can continue to be used. The higher the sulphur content of the fuel, the faster the alkaline reserves in the oil are depleted, and the oil change interval will be reduced. When the neutralisation capacity of used oil is zero, there is a high risk of highly corrosive engine wear and the formation of oil sludge.

Can engine oils be mixed?

In principle, motor oils can be mixed. Different viscosities can also be mixed. In this case, make sure that the oils to be mixed are approved by the engine manufacturer. To ensure optimum performance of LIQUI MOLY, we recommend not mixing it with other oils.

Made in Germany - what does that mean?

LIQUI MOLY oils and additives are produced exclusively in Germany. This enables us to guarantee the highest quality and to monitor it continuously.

Pro-Line Motor rinse

Problem:

The increasing proportion of biofuel in fuel and the high sulphur content of fuel in some countries lead to increased formation of oil sludge as a result of dilution of the fuel in the oil. The engine is no longer properly lubricated because of the sludge and wears more heavily.

Solution:

LIQUI MOLY Pro-Line Engine Rinse cleans the entire oil circuit before changing the oil, keeping the engine clean and reducing engine wear. A clean engine is an essential prerequisite for the proper operation of upstream exhaust gas pollution control systems.

A LITTLE PRIMER ON LUBRICANTS

Without the most modern high-performance lubricants, the development of cutting-edge engine technologies and the iOil change intervals of up to 50,000 km for passenger cars and 150,000 km for commercial vehicles would be impossible..

Engine oil lubricates the powertrain and is therefore an integral part of it.

These days, the powertrain for a modern vehicle can cost up to €20,000.

That should be reason enough to avoid saving in the wrong place.

Engine life depends essentially on the base oil used, the additive cocktail and the viscosity of the engine oil.

Help protect your vehicle or organ by minimising engine wear.

Advantages of modern high-performance lubricants :

  • Easier start-up and better flow at low temperatures
  • Better protection against wear and corrosion Greater stability at high temperatures
  • Reduced fuel consumption
  • Reduced oil consumption
  • Reducing breakdowns

Viscosity and viscosity index

Viscosity is the best-known characteristic of lubricating oils. It indicates the internal friction of an oil as it flows. When oils are cold, their internal friction is high (high viscosity). As the oil warms up, the internal friction decreases (low viscosity). The variation in viscosity under the effect of temperature change can differ from one oil to another and is indicated by the viscosity index (VI), a dimensionless numerical value. The higher the viscosity index, the lower the change in viscosity as a function of temperature. Mineral oils generally have a viscosity index between 90 and 100. Hydrocracking oils have a viscosity index between 120 and 140, while synthetic oils have a viscosity index between 140 and 160.

SAE grades

Engine and gearbox oils are characterised by SAE grades (SAE = Society of Auto- motive Engineers) which are used to designate viscosity. There are two categories. The number with the suffix «W» (winter), e.g. 0W, 5W, 10W, 15W, 20W and 25W for engine oils and 70W, 75W, 80W and 85W for gear oils, designates a cold flow behaviour defined according to the maximum viscosity at low temperature, the maximum limit temperature and the minimum viscosity at 100°C. The second number after the «W», e.g. 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 for engine oils and 80, 85, 90, 140 for gearbox oils, characterises the viscosity of engine and gearbox oils at a temperature of 100°C. As these temperatures do not correspond to the conditions found in practice, the HTHS (High Temperature High Shear) viscosity is also determined here at 150°C and with a high shear gradient (high engine speed). The purpose of determining HTHS limit values is to ensure that multigrade oils, thanks to viscosity index improvers, guarantee perfectly safe lubrication even at high oil temperatures and high engine speeds.

Categories

There are a large number of specifications and test methods for determining the performance of motor oils by means of tests carried out under conditions similar to those encountered in practice. Different vehicle engines are used for the tests. Internationally, there are the classifications of the American Petroleum Institute (API), the European specifications of the Association des Constructeurs Européens d'Automobiles (ACEA) and the directives of the vehicle manufacturers.

API

The American Petroleum Institute divides motor oils into two categories. On the one hand, there is the classification designated by the letter ’S« (service) for internal combustion/petrol engines, and on the other hand the classification designated by the letter »C« (commercial) for diesel engines. The letter »S« or »C« is followed by another letter, in ascending alphabetical order, which indicates the level of performance. API SP is currently the highest classification for internal combustion engines. For diesel engines, API CK-4 is currently the highest performance level.

Categories currently valid :
API SP, SN + RC, SN Plus, SN, SM, SL, SJ API FA-4, CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4, CH-4

ACEA
ACEA's specifications describe the minimum requirements that must be met by today's ultra-modern motor oils for motor vehicles. They are the most stringent in the world. ACEA is made up of European car manufacturers, the European Lubricant Manufacturers Association, additive manufacturers and test developers.

Motor oils are classified here into four categories:

ACEA A = for internal combustion and petrol engines

ACEA B = for diesel engines in passenger cars and light commercial vehicles

ACEA C= for petrol and diesel engines in passenger cars with exhaust gas after-treatment systems (three-way catalytic converters, diesel particulate filters)

ACEA E = for heavy-duty diesel engines

The letter «A», «B», «C» or «E» is followed by a number, e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 9, which indicates the oil's performance. But a higher number does not necessarily mean better quality.

Car manufacturer specifications

Many vehicle manufacturers believe that general oil specifications are not sufficient. They are therefore defining additional requirements for engine oil as a lubricant, e.g. to control problematic lubrication situations or extend maintenance intervals. Car manufacturers want to know more about the composition of individual oils, which means additional costs for the oil industry. If the lubricant meets the car manufacturer's requirements, the lubricant manufacturer obtains specific approval for a specific period. The lubricant manufacturer can then indicate the manufacturer's standard on the packaging.

Low friction oils

The designation «low friction oil» does not depend on the type of base oil used (synthetic, semi-synthetic). It refers solely to low-temperature viscosity. Low-friction oils are all-season oils with a low-temperature viscosity of SAE 0W-XX, 5W-XX and 10W-XX.

Low-friction engine oils reduce friction in the engine, saving fuel. The oil also flows more quickly through the engine, significantly reducing wear and extending engine life.
